The Freedom Community Historical Society is pleased to announce the next event in its 2025 Summer Reading Series, featuring a presentation by Waldo County author and historian Don Schultz. The event will take place on Saturday, August 30th, from 1-3 p.m. at the historic Freedom Town Meeting House, located at the corner of North Palermo Road and Town House Road.
Schultz, a U.S. Navy veteran and former Mt. View High School history teacher with over 25 years of experience, will discuss his debut book, One-Armed Devil. The book delves into the life and career of renowned Civil War general Philip Kearny. Known for losing his left arm in the Mexican War, Kearny went on to serve during the Civil War until his death at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862.
One-Armed Devil explores Kearny's experiences and the profound external and internal tensions that threatened the nation during that pivotal time. Schultz, who has studied the Civil War for more than half a century, will share his extensive knowledge and insights into the life of this fascinating historical figure.
The community is invited to attend this free presentation to learn more about a significant chapter in American history and celebrate the work of a local author.
