Maine Author Martha Tod Dudman Featured as Final Speaker in Freedom Summer Reading Series

Community members are welcome to the final installment of the 2026 Freedom Summer Reading Series, which will feature acclaimed Maine author Martha Tod Dudman.

The event will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 13 at the Freedom Town Meeting House, located at the corner of North Palermo Road and Town House Road in Freedom.

Dudman, a resident of Northeast Harbor, is celebrated for her diverse body of work, including Dawn, Expecting to Fly, Black Olives, Sunrise & the Real World, curio, and her widely acclaimed memoir Augusta, Gone, which was adapted into an award-winning feature film.

During the event, Dudman will discuss her latest novel, January, released by Swan's Island-based publisher North Country Press. Set against the stark backdrop of five frigid winter days on the Maine coast, the dramatic, high-energy story follows three women and one heartless man after a quiet morning in town quickly unravels.

Previous featured authors in this year’s Summer Reading Series include Gary Hoyle, author of Mystery Tusk, and Pam Smith, a prolific poet.
