The Freedom Community Historical Society is holding a public groundbreaking ceremony to mark the next major phase of the Keen Hall Rehabilitation Project. The event will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the historic site located at the intersection of Main Street and Route 137 in Freedom.

Following formal remarks and the official groundbreaking, a community gathering will be held to celebrate the milestone.
Built in the 1850s, Keen Hall stands as one of Freedom’s most significant historic landmarks. The property originally served as the homestead of Carter B. Keen, who later made history in 1911 as the first Director of the Division of Postal Savings of the U.S. Postal Service. Closely tied to the legacy of Freedom Academy, Keen Hall is the last surviving building connected to the former academy campus.
Recognized for its immense cultural and historic value, the property has been featured on Maine's list of "Ten Most Endangered" historic properties and is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The ambitious restoration effort is funded in part by a $327,000 federal grant from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund. Upon its completion, Keen Hall will find new life as a vibrant community center and the permanent home of the Freedom Community Historical Society. The rehabilitated facility will feature dedicated spaces for historical exhibits, archival collections, public workshops, meetings, and community events.
The restoration project is designed to serve a dual purpose: providing a practical modern gathering place for residents while acting as a lasting investment in the preservation of Freedom’s educational and cultural heritage.
Sponsored by the Freedom Community Historical Society, the groundbreaking ceremony represents a major step forward in its ongoing mission to preserve and renew local historic resources. Community members, supporters, and friends of local history are warmly invited to attend the June 6 event to witness the creation of a new, shared civic space for generations to come.
This event will be recorded and posted on the FCHS YouTube channel.
