The Freedom Community Historical Society is inviting the public to step back in time for an intimate look at a movement that reshaped the Maine landscape. On Saturday, May 2nd, the Old Town Meeting House in Freedom will host “Coming Back to the Land in Waldo County During the 1970s,” a community panel discussion exploring the wave of idealistic newcomers who moved to the region decades ago.
Starting at 1:00 p.m., the event promises a heartfelt conversation centered on the personal journeys of those who traded urban or suburban lives for the rugged beauty of rural Maine.
Exploring the Journey
The discussion, moderated by Doug Van Horn, will feature local panelists reflecting on the motivations and realities of the 1970s migration. The conversation will delve into three core themes:
The reasons why individuals chose to leave their previous lives behind.
The specific goals and ideals they were searching for when they arrived in Maine.
How their lives and journeys have unfolded in the years since.
A Community Dialogue
The event is designed to be more than just a lecture. Following the panel’s stories, the floor will open for a discussion with the audience, allowing long-time residents and newer neighbors to share their own perspectives and questions.
All are welcome to attend this exploration of local history. Admission to the event is free.
